Many people pick a node by the latency number alone, then wonder why video still stutters. That's because latency and bandwidth are two independent metrics.

Three different numbers

  • Ping latency: round-trip time to the server; affects how fast pages open and how games feel. Tens of milliseconds is good.
  • Real-connection latency: v2rayN's “test real-connection latency” goes through the actual proxy chain to a test URL, closer to real experience than raw ping.
  • Download speed / bandwidth: how much data per second; affects 4K video and large downloads. Not necessarily related to latency.

Measuring speed

Select the node, enable the system proxy, then test on a site like fast.com or speedtest. Note that speed tests really consume data — watch your quota on metered plans.

Rule of thumb

For everyday browsing, pick a low-latency node; for video and downloads, pick one with high measured bandwidth. Sometimes a 200 ms node downloads far faster than an 80 ms one.

Speed tests are capped by your local broadband. If your line is 100 Mbps, no proxy can exceed it — first work out whether the bottleneck is the proxy or your own connection.
