Shadowsocks (SS) appeared in 2012 as a lightweight encrypted SOCKS5 proxy. The core is simple: encrypt traffic with a password and a cipher, then forward it.

Strengths

Simple, cross-platform, fast, low latency and light on resources. In less strict network environments, SS is still very handy.

Weaknesses

Plain SS traffic has a recognisable signature and is vulnerable to active probing and traffic analysis. The community added obfs and v2ray-plugin obfuscation, and later Shadowsocks-2022 (SIP022), which markedly improved probing resistance.

Versus VMess / VLESS

SS is lighter and leaner, but in heavily censored environments its disguise is weaker than VLESS + REALITY or Trojan. The V2Ray / Xray core supports SS natively, so you can add SS nodes directly in v2rayN.

If you use SS, pick aes-128-gcm, chacha20-ietf-poly1305 or a 2022-blake3 cipher — never the long-broken rc4 or table.
